The LGBTQ community has an important role to play in economic growth on the island. Residents of the island are woven into the fabric, and many of them work in the fire department, school district, and sheriff’s office. A group of local gay philanthropists on the island established a monument to the memory of AIDS victims in 1997. Things began to turn around quietly after World War II as the island’s economy took a turn for the better. The economic history of Key West is like a roller coaster ride, going from boom to bust until the 1970s. Key West is the most visited vacation spot for LGBTQ travelers in the United States, drawing more than 250,000 visitors in large part because the entire island is known for its welcoming and accepting attitude toward LGBTQ individuals. Does Key West Have A High Gay Population? The City of Key West has installed four permanent rainbow crosswalks at the intersection of Duval and Petronia streets. The Pride festival in Key West in 2003 included the hoisting of a 1.25-mile-long rainbow flag. In 2000, the Key West City Commission adopted the One Human Family philosophy as the city’s official philosophy. In 1996, Red Shoe Drop was released, a parody of New York City’s Times Square ball drop. Richard Heyman was elected mayor of Key West, the first openly gay mayor in the United States. Leonard Bernstein wrote his first piece of music on the island in 1941, and it was published in 1941. LGBTQ personalities, influences, and events have shaped Key West’s modern-day history. Every year, there are several excellent annual events on Key West Pride and Womenfest, which are held on the two-mile-by-four-mile island. In 2000, Key West adopted the One Human Family slogan as its official slogan. Key West is a top LGBTQ vacation destination in the world, where people come to celebrate their openness and pride. The city is home to a number of popular gay bars and clubs, as well as the annual Fantasy Fest celebration, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.
